A BIT OF BACKGROUND ABOUT LAND CODE: The development of a Land Code is an important part of Tla-o-qui-aht’s broader journey toward strengthening self-determination and advancing reconciliation. By resuming jurisdiction over village (reserve) lands and resources, Tla-o-qui-aht is taking meaningful steps to ensure that decisions affecting its lands and people are made by Tla-o-qui-aht. On January 12, 2023, Tla-o-qui-aht signed the Framework Agreement on First Nation Land Management, which enables participating First Nations to resume management authority over their reserve lands. To do so, each Nation must develop a Land Code that sets out how village (reserve) lands will be governed and managed. Tla-o-qui-aht began drafting its Land Code in October 2024, and the draft has now completed legal review. A Land Code is not a treaty.
A BIT OF BACKGROUND ABOUT RECONCILIATION: In 2012, Tla-o-qui-aht Membership did not endorse an Agreement in Principle that would have moved Tla-o-qui-aht toward a modern treaty with the governments of Canada and British Columbia. In place of pursuing a treaty, leadership has sought to work with Canada and BC through reconciliation processes. Leadership has appointed a negotiating team to work with Canada and BC to strengthen Tla-o-qui-aht’s nation-to-nation relationship with BC and Canada, resolve long-standing differences and move forward in a respectful and cooperative manner. To guide negotiations, Tla-o-qui-aht entered a Hisiikcumyin with BC in 2021 and with Canada in 2024. The two Hisiikcumyin provide a framework that has guided negotiations with Canada and BC. At our sessions in mid-June we will be updating the community on the status of those discussions. We also look forward to hearing from membership about their thoughts on reconciliation discussions with Canada and BC
